American Standard Champion 4 2034.314.020

The 2034.314.020 is an option that we recommend for several reasons. The large, 2-3/8 inch trap, 4 inch flush valve, 1.6 GPF, and siphonic action jets work well together to achieve a strong flush that handle waste very well, with a 1000g MaP score.

Does trap size matter?

If you shop around, you will find that the wide majority of toilets have a trap size of around 2". This is certainly considered good enough for the majority of users. And if you take a look at the size of the testing materials Maximum Performance (MaP) use for rating flush power, they are about 7-8 inches in diameter, so unless your stools are bigger than this, you're probably going overboard in getting a bigger one.

So why do manufacturers market or even produce the 2 to 3 inch options? We believe it's usually a marketing tactic so they can say theirs is bigger than their competitors, but there can be exceptions to this. If that sounds like you, read more about our picks below.

List of in depth reviews

American Standard Champion 4 2034.314.020

We like the American Standard brand. They usually look great, and have amazing flushing performance to accompany it. And that's where the Champion 4 excels, good handling of waste in bulk, and a cleaner bowl after use that doesn't get clogged up.

But the 2034.314.020 doesn't just rely on performance alone. It has several features that enable it to stand out from many of its competitors on the market. Namely the 2-3/8 inches fully glazed trapway which can handle up to seventy percent more waste than your average toilet. That's a significant number.

It also comes equipped with a 4 inch, piston action, accelerator flush valve. Combined with a siphonic action bowl with jets, and a anti microbial, EverClean glazing, and you have a set of specs that will leave the bowl spotless.

Moving onto the overall design, this is a one piece toilet which has ADA qualities. What we mean by this is that it is tall enough to meet the seventeen to nineteen inches range set by the Americans with Disabilities Act. It is also a elongated style bowl which provides a bit of extra space for your legs, and certainly a more comfortable experience for males compared to round options.

If white isn't the right color for your bathroom, it's also available in linen and bone, which gets coated over a Vitreous China construction. It also includes a slow closing seat.

The main downside we found is that it could be better at conserving water. With so many eco friendly flushing systems out there, this one doesn't compare. It is on the heavy side of water usage, with a 1.6 GPF rate. WaterSense options will save you a considerably larger amount of water over the lifetime of the product.

TOTO Eco Soiree MS964214CEFG#01

TOTO toilets are excellent. It comes as no surprise to us that the MS964214CEFG#01 makes our list with some fantastic features and functionality included to improve the bathroom experience for the average home owner.

(Video) Best Toilets For Every Bathroom 2022 [Updated]

If you're after a highly efficient flush, the 1.28 GPF, tornado mechanism will provide just that, saving you thousands of gallons per year, whilst still rinsing the bowl effectively. In fact, it achieves a 600g MaP rating, which is definitely in the recommended range. It may not have the same performance as the 2034.314.020, but that models trade off for achieving that is using 1.6 gallons of water. So not as efficient.

Measuring 28.1 by 14 by 27.8 inches, plus having an elongated bowl that is right height means this isn't really suitable for compact washrooms. However, for those people with the floor space available, they will no doubt appreciate the added comfort and accessibility it brings.

The trap measures 2-3/16", and it has a 3" flush valve. This allows it to handle larger quantities of waste and the tornado nozzles will wash the bowl more effectively.

It's skirted so that it hides the trapway, and it comes equipped with a soft closing seat.

Other things to consider

Rough in - Your rough in size will usually measure around 12 inches. However, you need to be certain this is the case as some people will require 10" and 14" models. Use this guide to learn more.

Style - Does the overall style and color match the rest of your bathroom theme? Little details like the trip lever or buttons matching the faucets can really take the aesthetics up a notch. You should also look into whether or not you need a two piece or one piece product. Whilst not always the case, one piece units usually look better than their two piece counterparts. Other minor tweaks users can make to give it a more modern, homely feel, is by picking a skirted trapway for those smooth sides.

ADA height? - There are several pros and cons to ADA toilets. One such positive is that users can freely access the washroom regardless of their disability or any mobility problems they may have. They are also better suited to taller people. However, compared to standard height bowls, you increase the chances of constipation because your bowels do not get alligned into as natural a position for passing waste. Standard sizes are also better for shorter people. Picking between them will come down to your individual household environment.

(Video) Top 5 Best Toilets of 2023

Flush power - There is a great way of gauging how powerful a toilets flush is. Step in MaP ratings. This is a company that thoroughly tests products from a wide range of manufacturers and scores them on a 0-1000 gram scale. They get this score by using material designed to replace and act similarly to the average sized human waste, and seeing how the mechanism handles it. It's a reliable resource to get some unbiased information about a specific models capabilities.

Water usage - Readers should check the GPF rate before they buy anything. This stands for gallons per flush and as you would expect, it gives users information about the products water conservation abilities. 1.6 gallons is probably the most common, but there is an increasing demand for 1.28 GPF options as the years go by. This is because they meet EPA guidelines and can help save more than ten thousand gallons per year for the average home. Could be an excellent addition to your washroom if you're passionate about the environment. After all, there is no need to waste water, when there is mechanisms out there that can prevent that.

Glazing - Glazing like CEFIONTECT is a nano scale, ionized protective barrier that goes over the ceramic china to form a smooth protective layer that keep it clean and helps reduce things like bacterial build up and staining on the bowls surface. In effect it means less cleaning chemicals are needed, which are damaging, and a longer lasting product which leaves has all the hygienic properties required of a modern bathroom.

Seat included? - Some manufacturers are known to include all the fixtures in one box. Mansfield are a good example of this with their Pro Fit products, as are Toto intelligent units. However, there are occassions where consumers need to pay attention to the small print as hidden within, it will say the seat or supply isn't included, leaving you with the task of covering this expense.

Brands - If you're familiar with bathroom hardware, you will already know all about the big companies in the industry. However, it's important you look at what the smaller brands are producing. WoodBridge toilets are great and have some first rate flushing mechanisms whilst remaining affordable for the average consumer. In fact, what many of you may find is that many of them specialize in a specific style, and excel at it.

Consumer reports - Try to gauge consumer confidence about their purchase through product ratings and reviews online. The majority of the time, defects are glaringly obvious as many will be complaining. It's probably the first step you should take in your research simply because you can immediately learn whether or not to avoid buying by understanding the overall sentiment towards it.

Who is installing it? - If you have a fairly small budget, and you have no experience in plumbing and D.I.Y, you have to consider any costs associated with hiring a plumbing professional.
